With this recording of his organ arrangement of the great Fugue in B-flat major, op. 133 Martin Sturm, presented a fascinating and exciting contribution to the Beethoven centenary in 2020. His appearance on the Klais-organ at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, built in 2016, gives the most complex works from Beethoven’s late period, a peerless tonal and spatial depth. Embedded in an extraordinary program alongside an arrangement of Beethoven’s piano fantasy in G minor / B Major op. 77 and improvisations on themes by Joseph Haydn and Bernd Alois Zimmermann convey storm’s reading of the Great Fugue as an example of the great emotionality and explosive power of Beethoven’s music and the organ as an instrument. His grandiose improvisation “Freude, schöner Götterfunken”: variations and double fugue for the final movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony op. 125, shows once again the richness of colours of the organ in the city, patterned after the historic Ladegast organ in Schwerin Cathedral. It also shows the enormous artistic potential of the internationally acclaimed prize-winner Martin storm.
